Are Gun Safes Waterproof?

Similar to fireproofing, there’s no regulation on certifications that claim a gun safe is waterproof or water resistant, so always take those labels with a grain of salt. This said, depending on where you live and the likelihood of flooding in your area, there’s a couple things you’ll want to research before purchasing. Specifically, the depth of water the safe can handle, and for how long it can stay submerged.

Check the Gun Safe Details on Water-resistance

Most manufacturers who make water-resistant safe will give you specific details on what their safe can handle. For example, a safe may be water resistant up to 39 inches for up to 72 hours. Before you hand over your hard-earned money, make sure those details match your expectations. You don’t want to pay for a safe that will only protect your valuables against flooding for a few hours if you’re expecting it to offer a few days’ worth of water resistance.

No Gun Safe Is Completely Waterproof

When it comes to choosing the right safe, water resistance is a huge factor. But just remember that no safe is completely waterproof. If you experience a flood and the water is deep enough, or your safe is submerged long enough, it’ll let water in.
